Despair

That moment in grading when you realize a whole class of students doesn't understand a word you took for granted that they did.

In this case, the word is "proofread."

Worse, they didn't seem to realize that they don't know what it means.

    Yup. I still cringe when I remember the first midterm I gave in a South African history survey...when it became obvious that about a quarter of the class was not distinguishing between "Afrikaner" and "African." Oy.

    Sorry. I'm just sitting down to my first big bout of marking and I expect to encounter similar levels of basic incomprehension.
