That moment in grading when you realize a whole class of students doesn't understand a word you took for granted that they did.

In this case, the word is "proofread."

Worse, they didn't seem to realize that they don't know what it means.

  1. Sarabeth7:03 AM

Yup. I still cringe when I remember the first midterm I gave in a South African history survey...when it became obvious that about a quarter of the class was not distinguishing between "Afrikaner" and "African." Oy.

  2. Inconceivable!

    *end Princess Bride moment*

Sorry. I'm just sitting down to my first big bout of marking and I expect to encounter similar levels of basic incomprehension.

  3. When I just catch up with all the other three thousand things I need to do, I'll be with you. The first read through was not promising.
