Historicity

My campus is having a "15th century" dinner in "the spirit of Elizabethan times," including potatoes and coffee.

But in the 15th C they drank coffee in the Ottoman empire, and ate potatoes in the americas, so it's globally accurate. Elizabethan, not so much!

  2. Holy anachronisms, Batman!

The next thing you'll tell us is that they're providing forks and desserts made with sugar!

  4. Ok, now I GOTTA know - there are all those historical clothing and reenactment societies, is there a historical cooking group type thing?

  5. I would love it if there were a historical cooking society! I've never been really interested in those historical reenactment things because I just can't imagine being that into clothes or weaponry, but food is another matter.

  6. A food thing would be way more tempting, wouldn't it?

When I was in grad school, one of the other grad students put together a yearly medieval feast, including home brewed no-hops beer, and it was always lots of fun. We had to bring our own spoon and knife, no forks allowed, and we ate off trenchers.

  7. I don't know if that's tragic or hilarious - a bit of both, I think!
Speaking of food, I recently saw a poster from the local Slow Food Society for a slow food medieval banquet. I'm quite curious to see what they come up with.
