Despair

The headmaster appointed an emergency team (35 people) to make recommendations to help deal with the budget emergencies, and only after some people at the first meeting complained did he notice that he hadn't appointed a single person of color, and had that women were seriously underrepresented.

And yet we're supposed to believe that he's committed to anti-racism on campus.

And we're supposed to believe that the emergency team is going to make meaningful recommendations.

From the new list, it looks like he's added a few people of color and maybe another woman or two.

  1. I feel sorry for the people who were added - everyone knows, so they are automatically second class members of the task force. Sigh.

  2. Fortunately, the men of color (yes, only men) chosen are well-respected on campus. I think it's clear to most people that this is unconscious (we hope) racism on the headmaster's part rather than lack of qualifications of our colleagues who are people of color and/or women.

  3. I just hope the people who were added were relieved of some other service commitments in exchange for their participation. While it's good to have more balanced/representative membership on such an important committee, being the token/representative you-name-it on too many committees can eat into a professor's research time (assuming (s)he has any left in the first place; if not, it can eat into family/sleep/other important things time).
