It was celebrated with sermons and solemn fasts, but also feasts and bonfires and bells, well into James reign. The official events moved to Guy Fawkes Day after 1605, but Accession Day was used sometimes to offer covert criticism of James by honoring his predecessor. Both picked up energy from their proximity to All Hallows' Eve. Officially, it would be bell ringing, a sermon; but it was a holiday, so drinking, bonfires, etc could all happen.

I'm mystified by the concert, ad my guesses have all failed.Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09716705206734059708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17974015.post-27874073672260416932014-11-16T19:10:39.317-08:002014-11-16T19:10:39.317-08:00Well, it's not Altamont, though that day is ac...Well, it's not Altamont, though that day is actually pretty close. But it doesn't seem quite fair. The second one, none of my guesses has panned out so far. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
