I use Nickel and Dimed in my class Public Issues; the students do a fairly good job with it. The books they have used for the common book were The Life of Pi and then Branded for the past two years.

I don't find many students who pay attention to it.Chaserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02124246378936489539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17974015.post-1165205488689588752006-12-03T20:11:00.000-08:002006-12-03T20:11:00.000-08:00You're not missing anything! Teaching first year writing is something we mostly all do, and thus has the potential to be a good thing for us to come together about.

We realized at the meeting that it might actually be worth while to ask students how they felt about the common reading. Yes, we're not exactly scientific about this, but we're thinking and working things out.Bardiachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11846065504793800266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17974015.post-1165173334144836862006-12-03T11:15:00.000-08:002006-12-03T11:15:00.000-08:00Am I missing something, or isnt' the point of a co...Am I missing something, or isnt' the point of a common reading to give the students a common point of discussion across sections? Sure, the faculty having a common book would normally build some discussion, but if building community in the faculty is the purpose of a common reading, why not have a faculty reading group or something?Inside the Philosophy Factoryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12255753259090709877noreply@blogger.com
