We do look for folks whose writing sample convinces us of their specialty, too.Bardiachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11846065504793800266noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17974015.post-91884178183070327362012-11-15T18:13:09.082-08:002012-11-15T18:13:09.082-08:00I am really enjoying this series, too (even though...I am really enjoying this series, too (even though I'm now definitely on the search committee side of things).

We have just entered this focusing phase with our search. I haven't started reading any of the additional materials yet, but I would offer this advice: in the focusing stage, some people are probably going to fall out b/c they have not really convinced us that they are Deepwater Basketweavers. So one advice for candidates might be to consider how the writing sample they send connects with the ad. We have some people in our focusing pool (which for us is 24, twice as large as the # of people we hope to interview at the convention) who are definitely Underwater Basketweavers, but whose Deepwater Basketweaving expertise is not entirely clear. Perhaps they sometimes teach some Deepwater Basketweaving even though their dissertation is largely on Reef Basketweaving, but with some glancing attention to the influence of deepwater on reefs. If the writing sample focuses extensively on the problems of reef destruction and the impact that will have on the future of Reef Basketweaving, the sample isn't going to help convince us to hire them into a Deepwater Basketweaving position.

We're looking, in the samples, to get a sense of scholarly potential; we're also a group of nonspecialists in this field, so we want a happy introduction to the field. Some cover letters had way too much field-specific jargon; I'll be interested in how this issue plays out in the writing samples.

susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12000470374101306070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17974015.post-42926219730835528232012-11-15T09:57:09.388-08:002012-11-15T09:57:09.388-08:00I just want to say thank you for posting this seri...I just want to say thank you for posting this series. My program's job placement committee has been utterly fantastic, but no one has given this kind of perspective--it really helps put in perspective why we're being told to do the things we are told to do.Sapiencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09259871146375570988noreply@blogger.com
